When You Don't Know

Today we're still following the encounter that Moses had with God at the burning bush. We're going to look at another perspective of this encounter.

Yesterday we determined that Moses was curious at the site of a burning bush that wasn't burning up and he turned aside to find out what was strange about this. God had captured his attention.

At the same time that Moses was drawing near to God, God knew the things that he needed to get across to Moses. He knew everything that Moses needed to know, but Moses did not know.

That is a huge point!

Write this down, underline it multiple times… God knows everything you need to know.
Just remembering that fact, stirs us up to seek the Lord. We need to know what he wants us to do and he knows very well what he wants us to do.

So as Moses is approaching, God and God is giving him instructions to takeoff his sandals because the place that he was standing on was holy, Moses humbled himself.

God said “I am the God of your father—the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look upon God.” Exodus 3:6  - Moses' response to the revelation that he was speaking to God was to humble himself.

Proverbs 15:33 in the Amplified says “The reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord brings instruction in Wisdom, and humility comes before honor.”

When we have the fear of the Lord we realize that He is God and we respect and honor Him above all. When we are in His presence we humbly listen to what He has to say. We are more interested in learning from Him than telling Him all about our troubles.

Another great scripture to describe this humility of heart is, 1 Peter 5:6 AMP- “Therefore humble yourselves [demote, lower yourselves in your own estimation] under the mighty hand of God, that in due time He may exalt you,”

In other words, it says that we place ourselves under his mighty hand. We recognize that he is over us. We recognize that he is God and we are not.

The last part of this verse is very important as well. He wants to exalt us. He wants to raise us up to a higher level. He wants to use us in a big way. But we have to do something first. We have to show ourselves to God as teachable.

We don't know everything. I'll go one step further and say we don't even know as much as we think we know.

I understand that's a huge statement… But it is true.

Compared to God, we know very little.

Every time we encounter God, he wants to show us something that we don't know. Or he wants to remind us of something that we have possibly forgotten.

If you study out the initial conversation that God had with Moses there is a natural progression. God wanted to know the heart of Moses. Was Moses humble? Because it would take a humble man to lead his people out of Egyptian bondage into the promised land.

Remember, Moses would come back and pray to God and seek his face to find out the next step before he would confront Pharaoh  or before he would make a decision to take the next step.

Moses never had all the answers. He had to grow in his dependence upon God. That is the bottom line of humility. We grow in our dependence upon God.

So let's make this our prayer and confession today,

Lord, I come to you with a humble heart and I know that there's so much that I don't know. I open my heart and my mind to seek you. I want to know your wisdom and your ways. You said in your word to ask you if I need wisdom. So today, I'm asking you for more wisdom. I believe that I receive the wisdom that I need to make the right decisions today. Thank you for speaking to me from your word and by your Spirit in Jesus name, amen.
